Royal retiree by the queen, just as the painter himself was by the king. In the painting it is located in the background, in an open door through which outside light enters.

I see him as discreet, controlling, watchful and influential at court. In my interpretation I have stripped him of his dark appearance to find all his power and energy, such a bravura, which he hides but which he uses with prudence and discretion.
